Asking for Autographs

Authors are usually happy to sign autographs, however, here are some tips to remember.

  • Do present a book or journal not a scrap of torn paper
  • Let them know you are pleased to meet them
  • Be polite, a compliment is welcomed
Seize the right opportunity to ask for their autograph
  • Ask for a specific message or date included
  • Let them know the spelling of your name
    Thank them and smile
  • You may suggest a friend take a photo while you are receiving a signature
  • Have a good pen ready although usually they use their own
  • If you are standing in a long queue have your page opened ready
  • Ask nicely for them to include a contact address or email

Some of my prized autographs include Shaun Tan with drawings, Margaret Mahy, Terry Denton, Greg Rogers, Markus Zusak, John Marsden, Peter Carey, Duncan Ball and Paul Jennings.
